Nonverbal messages make up a majority of the meaning of a message. Nonverbal communication is omnipresent: every communication act includes a nonverbal component. There are nonverbal signals that are understood cross-culturally. Non verbal messages are trusted over verbal messages. Emblems- body movements that carry meaning in and of themselves. Do not need verbal accompaniment (thumbs up) Illustrators- do not carry meaning without verbal accompaniment. Waving a finger at a kid while scolding them. Regulators- body movements that are employed to help guide conversations. Help signal a desire to speak, or a desire not to be called on, or to communicate to the speaker that you are or are not listening (head nod, looking at watch, eye contact) Adaptors- body movements that satisfy physical or psychological needs. Self adaptors- movements people direct towards themselves (nail biting) Alter-directed adaptors- movements people direct to the bodies of others (caressing a partner"s hair)
