There began to be more and more calls for political openness. 1987- most radical reformers ousted (hu yaobang) 1989 hu"s death inspires tiananmen square protests. He represented democracy, mourning him became a symbolic way to challenge regime. Zhao ziyang ousted for sympathizing with protesters. Provides nice overview of policies since mao and why they are now running into difficulty. 1989-2003 post tiananmen, post soviet constrained reform.
