When children first walk it looks like a waddle. This is because their legs are wide apart to begin with, and there is movement from side to side. It takes several months for their toddler gait to develop into a more mature walking state. Preschool children are running, jumping and are becoming leaner and longer. Will add 2 to 3 inches and 5 pounds annually. Individual differences are more apparent now than in infancy. Body systems differ in their patterns of growth. Brain grows faster than any other part of body. Growth norms for one population are not good standards for everywhere in the world. When the typical adult height is only 5 feet (republic of congo) the child from this culture would be shorter than most of the north american same aged peers. Girls who are ahead of boys in physical development will lose teeth sooner. North american children typically start getting adult (primary) teeth at age 6 .
