A. Monophony (Monophonic) :
>Single “voice” or melody without accompaniment ( does not mean one person)
B. Heterophony:
>multiple versions of a melody heard simultaneously
C. Polyphony (Polyphonic) :
>two or more different melodic lines combined, based on counterpoint
D. Homophony (Homophonic):
>Single melody of interest, subordinate accompaniment
>Homorhythmic: homophony where all the “voices” or parts move in the same rhythm
Slide 3: Contrapuntal Devices
A. Counterpoint: one musical line set against another
B. Imitation: Melodic idea presented in one voice and restated in another (has to have two layers of sound)
C. Canon: a strictly imitative work
>Round: a type of canon in which each voice enters in succession with the same melody (as in “Row,
row, row your boat)
