Document Summary

Cell theory - one or more cells comprise all living things, the cell is the basic unit of life, and new cells arise from existing cells. All cells share 4 common components: plasma membrane, cytoplasm, dna - cell"s genetic material, ribosomes - synthesize proteins. Prokaryote - simple, mostly single-celled organisms that lacks a nucleus or any other membrane bound organelle. Nucleoid - the cell"s central part where prokaryotic dna is located. Small size is necessary for all cells. As a cell increases in size, its surface area:volume ratio decreases the plasma membrane will not have sufficient surface area to support the rate of diffusion required for the increased volume. Divide or develop organelles that perform specific tasks more efficient. Unlike prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells have: a membrane bound nucleus, membrane bound organelles, rod-shaped chromosomes. Plasma membrane - a phospholipid bilayer w/ embedded proteins that separates the internal contents of the cell from its surrounding environment.
