Document Summary

Filters and processes the fluid that escapes from blood vessels. Lymph is the fluid contained within lymphatic vessels: a lot like plasma. Lymph is dumped back into the veins by the heart. Vessels and dead-ended vessels: fluid gets into vessels and moves back to heart (one direction) Fluid is interstitial fluid: proteins in this fluid in interstitial space. Colloid osmotic pressure: proteins can"t get into or out of capillaries, fluid gets in through the lymphatic system. Formed by loosely overlapping endothelial cells: simple squamous epithelium. Anchored by collagen filaments: holds cells in place so they can"t shift. Pressure of fluid outside capillaries pushes on overlapping cells. Pressure opens channel between cells so fluid can enter until the pressure decreases. Lymphatic capillaries almost everywhere we have capillary beds: exceptions: bones, teeth, nervous system. Small intestine is the site of absorption. Lacteals are in the villi of the small intestine (surrounding the lumen) Don"t absorb proteins because our body breaks them down.
