Particular type of sound is grouped together all through the orchestra. Smallest and highest pitched: widest range of string family, easily confused with violin/viola. Bridge: keep strings off body of instrument, curved to isolate string. Bow: what you draw back and forth. Double stop: play more than one string at a time. The shorter the column, the higher the pitch. Flute: highest pitched in band, metal. Oboe: double reed, looks similar to clarinet, clear/emotive sound, oboe player tunes the orchestra. Single reed, warm/rich tone color, plays extremely soft, widest range of woodwind family. Bassoon: double reed, fairly low and high. Double reed: 2 pieces of cane folded over, vibrate together. Articulated: da, da, da, da, da, every note is separate. French horn: smallest mouthpiece in brass family, widest range in brass family, stopped when clogged with hand. Trombone: has a slide, shorter=high pitch, longer=deeper. Tuba: biggest member of brass family, biggest mouthpiece, lowest voices in entire band.
