Emotions
How are emotion and motivation related?
They’re connected (neurologically)
They provide considerable support for the evolutionary perspective
That does NOT mean the other perspectives are invalid here (behaviorist and cognitive)
Behaviorist - associative learning
Cognitive - judgment and decision making
Example of the neurological connections…
You’ll recall that the sense of smell is NOT routed through the thalamus
And smells can recall old memories and emotions (recently called proustian effect)
Nobel prize winner Britt-moser:
Was able to describe how emotions are connected in the brain
James-Lange Theory of Emotion
Experience of emotion is awareness of physiological response to emotion-arousing
stimuli
What happens…
Sight of oncoming car (perception of stimulus)
This creates physiological changes → heart begins to pound
This creates the feel of emotion… in this case it is Fear
Stimulus → arousal → emotion
Your brain is “reading” your physiological feelings
If your heart is pounding… your brain says “oh i must be scared”
Problems: pounding heart, breathing fast is not associated with any specific emotion
Your heart beats fast when you are mad, in love, or scared so it isn’t entirely
clear the emotions and physiological states
Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion
emotion -arousing stimuli simultaneously trigger:
Physiological responses
Subjective experience of emotion
He says that after the stimulus… you heart pounding and emotion are simultaneous
Shachter’s Two Factor Theory of Emotion
To experience emotion one must:
Be physically aroused
Cognitive label the arousal
Sight of oncoming car simultaneously makes heart start pounding AND cognitive lab(i’m
afraid) → then you are able to feel that you are scared (emotion)
Cognition and Emotion (the brains shortcut for certain emotions) → mostly fear
