Motivation: what makes some people run marathons, what makes someone climb a mountain, what makes you stay in school, why do some people smoke when it is dangerous, motivation. What is motivation: motivation: the factors that influence the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior, motivation cannot be directly observed, it is inferred from what can be observed. Instinct theory: we behave the way we do because of instincts; it is innate (biological approach) Instincts: automatic, involuntary, and unlearned behavior patterns triggered by particular stimuli, but, instinct theory describes behavior, does not explain it, you can make up many instincts for anything. You have had no water in a long time, chemical balance in body is off. A hierarchy of motives/needs: abraham maslow (1970) suggested that certain needs have priority over others, hierarch of needs, self-actualization needs, esteem needs. Need to live up to one"s fullest and unique potential.
