PSY 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Chromosome, Karyotype, Phenotype
Document Summary
Quantitative: involves numbers, most studies are quantitative. Placebos are generally not used as much because it is unethical to deceive the general public. Basic: no immediate application, one knows immediately what they will do with the results of the study. Applied: can be immediately used in the real world. Psychophysiological methods - focus on relationship between physiological processes and behavior. Eeg: measuring electrical activity of the brain through the skull, figuring out where things are happening in the brain when someone is doing something. Mri: 3d image of brain activity, observing blood flow. Cross-sectional - people of different age groups are compared. Problems can include the cohort effect: born at a certain time in history that may influence your personality or beliefs. Longitudinal: on group of people measured repeatedly over course of several years. Problems can include the research taking many years. Sequential: a combination of cross-sectional and longitudinal, participants of various ages measured repeatedly over course of several years.
