Document Summary

Bio 121 - week 8 - lecture 13 (pt. The process utilized by autotrophs to manufacture organic food molecules. The process utilized by autotrophs and heterotrophs to harvest the chemical energy of organic food molecules. Produces co2, h2o and atp energy for cellular work. Within an ecosystem, nutrients cycle and energy flows. Cellular respiration converts the chemical (potential) energy stored in food molecules (glucose) to the atp energy required for all cellular work. The reactants contain more chemical energy than the products. The energy released is used for atp synthesis. Hydrogens are transferred from glucose to oxygen during the cellular respiration reactions. The removal of hydrogens from glucose yields carbon dioxide. The addition of hydrogens to oxygen yields water. Chemical reactions that transfer hydrogens also transfer electrons. Glucose loses hydrogens (and electrons) and is therefore oxidized. Oxygen gains hydrogens (and electrons) and is therefore reduced. When one molecules is oxidized, another molecule is reduced.
