MFE 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Hot Working, Work Hardening, Roll Forming
Document Summary
Pushing into it until it deforms into the desired shape. Use a material whose properties make it soft and ductile such as a metal. All forming imparts some directional properties according to the direction of deformation. Cold working deformation will strengthen the metal, but will also lower ductility. Strength: with stronger materials more force will be required to deform material. Ductility: with more ductility the material will be able to be deformed more prior to cracking. Element of elastic deformation in spring back behavior. All metals will rebound a small amount after being deformed. For instance, if a wire is bent, and let go, it will spring back a small amount. Materials, temperature, geometry (rolling vs extrusion), deformation amount, deformation speed (forging impact vs. squeeze), friction, tooling, wear. Di erent metals will respond di erently to bulk deformation and ancillary conditions. Main variables are strength and ductility, and also strength at elevated temperatures.
