MFE 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Coordinate-Measuring Machine, Vernier Scale, Calipers
Document Summary
There are many types of measuring instruments to handle the vast number of base and secondary units that need to measured at times. In most production settings measuring distance is very common. Following is a brief introduction to a few measuring instruments. Instruments covered are: micrometers, vernier calipers, optical comparator, coordinate measuring machines (cmm, go-no go gages, depth gages. We will not be able to cover measurement devices in much detail, but there are a few basics things. It can measure to a certain level of precision by closing the faces around the part you want to measure using the ratchet stop, then reading the dimension from the sleeve and thimble markings. Micrometers come in many sizes and are very common in production settings. Calipers can measure parts just like a micrometer. So, you add 0. 029 to the lower range value of 1. 050 to get a nal measurement of 1. 079 inches. Calipers also come with dial indicators and digital readout.
