The body will experience a growth spurt during the adolescent period. Hormonal changes take place gradually and begin at about 8 or 9 years of age. Muscle growth, body & facial hair, and other male sex characteristics. Breasts and uterus mature, feminine proportions and fat to accumulate. Quick weight gain and growth in height is the growth spurt. Girls gain weight between ages 11-16, body growth complete by age 16. Boys weight decreases in arms and legs, grow more muscles, body growth complete by age 17. 5. Boys have an increase in red blood cells, ability to perform well in athletics at this time. Dramatic growth spurt in motor development and physical activity for boys and continues throughout the teen years.
