Rel 155: the new testament: 25 october 2016. Class 16: the authenticity of paul"s letters: the authenticity of the letters. Scholars are agreed on the authenticity of several of paul"s letters. But not in that order. (the canonical order is based on length). They disagree over the remaining six, which fall into two groups: (a) deutero-paulines: some scholars think that some or all of these are by paul. (b) pastoral epistles, most scholars think that these are not by paul. Practice of writing under the name of a famous figure is widespread in antiquity (cid:558) adds authority to the document. These books are not actually written by enoch or ezra or any of these figures. They are pretending to be great figures of old to lend authority to their document. Same practice obtains in the hebrew bible too (cid:558) texts are retrospectively attributed to the great figures of the past, psalms to david, song of songs to solomon, etc.
