Horizontal segregation (across occupations): refers to differences in the amount of people of each gender present across occupations. Pollution theory: suggests that jobs which are predominated by women offer lower wages than do jobs simply because of the presence of women within the occupation. The work done primarily by women are valued less. As women enter an occupation, this reduces prestige/wage. Vertical segregation (within occupations): describes men"s domination of the highest status jobs in both traditionally male and traditionally female occupations. Men make more than women within occupations.
