HSA 3110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Barometer, Nonverbal Communication, Active Listening
Document Summary
Communication is the exchange of ideas, thoughts, or emotions between or among two or more people. Feedback is the essential characteristic of human interchange that defines two-way communication. Without feedback for confirmation or verification to close the loop, the opportunity for misunderstanding is significant, and true communication has not occurred. Communication has verbal and nonverbal components, and each component has conscious and unconscious aspects. The three parts of a verbal exchange are the voice, the content of the message and response, and the method used to transmit the information. The voice conveys emotions, and the tone, accents, intonation and speed of delivery are all factors in a verbal exchange. Some factors are genetic, and some are cultural. The choice of words and use of silences are other factors. Nonverbal communication is composed of movements, gestures, expressions, and silences. Unconscious thoughts may also influence behavior, but these thoughts, feelings, or emotions are not part of the person"s awareness.
