Europe had become a much more stable & prosperous place w/ growing economy & growing poliical stability. Old roman roads were repaired & new roads built during romanesque period to allow connecion to pilgrimage sites. 3 major pilgrimage sites: holy land (most couldn"t go there though because contested land & distant), rome (site of early church & many relics, but diicult to get to for people north of the alps) & saniago de compostela (nw coast of spain & site of st. james"s relics) Council of clermont (1095) called by pope urban ii where urban proclaimed the 1 st crusade. Purpose of the crusades was to liberate the holy land & make it safe for pilgrimages. 2 major sources of patronage during romanesque period: feudal system & the church.
