Bound ribosomes are attached to the (rough) endoplasmic reticulum and release protein into this organelle. Function is to translate rna into a protein. Rough er (has ribosomes attached)- involves packaging of proteins and maybe modifying proteins. Smooth er- lipid synthesis and calcium handling. Works with the rough er in modifying and packaging proteins. Rod-shaped structures that produce most of the cells energy. Transfer chemical energy from macromolecules to form. Not a membrane-enclosed organelle, but important for overall cell function. Important in dna segregation during cell division. 3 types: microfilament, intermediate filament, and microtubules.
