Document Summary

1 molecule of glucose = 38 total atp (learn to draw diagram (on notecard)) Under anaerobic conditions, only 2 atp are produced (in glycolysis) other 36 atp are stored in lactate. Excess glucose can be stored as glycogen in liver and skeleton muscle. Majority of energy in body is stored as fat (triglyceride) Fat stored in adipocytes, released into blood as needed. At rest, roughly half our energy comes from fat. 1st fa must be removed from the triglycerides (lipase) Glycerol enters glycolysis, fa enter beta oxidation. Beta oxidation takes place in mitochondrial matrix. Costs 2 atp to initially activate the fa (1st cycle only) Once activated, fa cycles through beta- oxidation. Activated fa that is 2 carbons shorter than before. Beta-oxidation reactions are reversed to assemble fa from acetyl coa. Fas can be synthesized from carbs and protein. But glucose can"t be formed from fa! Peptide bonds broken by proteases to release amino acids.
