Document Summary

Cells transfer energy from macronutrients to atp. Atp is synthesized by 3 distinct (but linked) pathways. Energy from atp hydrolysis is used to power biological work. 1 glucose molecule goes through 10 reactions to make2 pyruvate. If there is oxygen then pyruvate gets converted to acetyl coa and then goes to the krebs cycle. If there is no oxygen it goes to fermentation and pyruvate is converted to lactate. Gets pyruvate out of glycolysis (so glycolysis can continue. Receives breakdown products from carb, fat, and protein metabolism (acetyl coa) Acetyl coa is made by pyruvate, or by beta oxidation (fat breakdown) Pyruvate to acetyl coa= 1 nadh and one co2. Strips hydrogen atoms (electrons) and donates them to coenzymes. Also produces co2 and small amounts of atp. Multiply all above by 2 (because 2 acetyl coa enter the krebs cycle from glycolysis) Does not use oxygen (directly) requires the oxygen used to power oxidative phosphorylation to regenerate its co enzymes.
