BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Alpha Motor Neuron, Golgi Tendon Organ, Adrenal Medulla
Document Summary
Sympathetic: fight/flight, activated by stress, lack of specificity, neurochemical/anatomical organization. Preganglionic neuron connects to post ganglionic neuron for all effectors (except the adrenal medulla) In the adrenal medulla, the preganglionic neuron connects to the chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla. Preganglionic --> postganglionic & preganglionic --> chromaffin cells release acetylcholine. In the adrenal medulla, the release of ach triggers the release of epinephrine/norepinephrine. In the postganglionic neuron, the release of ach triggers the release of norepinephrine. These releases of epinephrine/norepinephrine construct blood vessels so that the muscles in "fight or flight more" release ach. Parasympathetic: relaxation, more specific - acts directly on target tissue, pre ganglionic neurons & axons are longer than those of the sympathetic division, neurochemical/anatomical organization. Preganglionic neuron releases ach which causes the release of ach from the postganglionic neuron to blood vessels in the skeletal muscle. A motor unit is the basic unit needed for any movement.
