Document Summary

Horsts & grabens: horsts: when land is rising (a hill, graben: when hanging wall is falling (hole) Thrust faults: rocks are eroding and it leaves a little island of the rock that was previously there. Strike-slip faults: exhibit motion along strike, ex: there is a straight stream but then there"s a fault and it moves the land so the stream now curves. Transform faults: are strike-slip faults that are between tectonic plates, can be seen as little cracks that separate a mid-ocean ridge in the ocean. Joints: are fractures along which no displacement has occurred. Mass wasting: the downslope movement of (a lot of) earth materials due to the influence of gravity. Controls (things that affect) mass wasting: water. When dry, friction between grains holds them in place. When wet, friction between grains weakens and loosens them. Angle of repose: slope at which unconsolidated particles assume a stable slope (usually between 25 and 40 degrees)
