We use a rule (that has been proven by mathematicians) to solve a specific problem: conjectures educated quesses. Give a problem: logical argument: premises (facts, observations, rule) Examples: carrie"s 1st three children were boys. If she has another baby, it will be a boy. If you take your vitamins, you"ll feel better. Answer: deductive reasoning: predict probable next number. Set: a collection of objects: objects of the set, members of the set. A set of even counting numbers less than 10 words: 0 doesn"t count. Set builder notations: {x | x is an even # less than 10} {a, b, c, d} = {a, c, d, b} 2 sets equal if: every element in set a is in set b, every element in set b is in set a. Irrational: pie and the square root of 2.
