Psychotherapy accomplishes its goals by addressing one or more of the following: disturbed thoughts, disturbed emotions, disturbed behaviors. Interpersonal and life situation difficulties: biomedical disturbances. Myths of psychotherapy: there is one best therapy, therapists ca(cid:374) (cid:862)read (cid:373)i(cid:374)ds(cid:863, people who go to therapists are crazy or just weak, which leads to stigma, only the rich can afford therapy. The scientist-practitioner gap: co(cid:374)cer(cid:374) that therapists are (cid:374)ot (cid:862)keepi(cid:374)g up(cid:863) with (cid:374)ew scie(cid:374)tific fi(cid:374)di(cid:374)gs, rise of therapy-only educational institutions, proliferation of new, unsupported therapies. Which therapy, which therapist: cognitive therapy is good for phobias, long-term group therapy is best for personality disorders, behavior therapy is best for children. Interest: understanding, respect, tact, maturity, ability to help. Important client factors include: social class, gender, age, level of education, expectations for therapy, level of anxiety. Does it work: some argue that psychotherapy does not work and that only medications work however the research shows otherwise, research on psychotherapy.
