Lecture 10: group processes: characteristics of groups, 3 or more people, help basic human needs to belong, get information, establish our identity, & social norms, members tend to be similar, people who watch scrubs, wear glasses, etc. Deindividuation- the loosening of normal constraints on behavior when in a crowd, leading to an increase in impulsive and deviant acts. When they were left alone with a bowl of candy, they were more likely to take more than one piece. However, if they were made self-aware (decreasing deindividuation) by stating their names, they take less candy (especially when alone: 3) distraction- environmental cues that takes the focus away from the self increases deindividuation. Soldier in the military, boss vs. employee, etc: prison stanford study- people can easily forget that other people are human. In the presence of others, people solve math problems quicker, and excavate more sand.
