Personality is made up of traits characteristics that are static over time and across situations. Personality disorders characterized by a single dominant, dysfunctional trait. Causes distress and impairment: not necessarily for themselves but for other people, egosyntonic symptoms don"t bother you, egodystonic view your symptoms as problematic. May have to develop certain traits depending on the environment you live. Females are diagnosed with certain disorders more than men. Can take a long time to diagnose a personality disorder correctly. Individual could have two or more different disorders at the same time. Attachment theory attachment style as a child is a template for later relationships: secure, insecure, disorganized, poor attachment in childhood= poorer adult relationships. Cognitive behavioural perspectives: parents help solidify negative schemas by invalidating emotional experiences of the child. Biological factors: some heritability between parents and children, different for each disorder. Family studies of ppd indicated higher than avg. relatives with schizophrenia.
