ANTH 9 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Lithic Reduction, National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act Of 1966
Document Summary
Vessels are fragile but sherds(piece of broke pottery) are durable. Can keep being broken down and still survive. Made by firing clay to drive off structural h20. Many ways to form vessels: hand mold, coil, throw, slip mold. Myriad of ways to decorate: paint, applique, glaze. Other major artifact category studied by archaeologists: lithics are the oldest tools, lithics preserve in virtually all deposits, lithics are a common artifact type until they are replaced by metal. Lithics result from a reductive technology = less variation. Flaked or chipped stone tools- formed by breaking stone to get sharp edges used for cutting, scraping, penetrating (must use material that has almost no internal structure)-glass has none. Ground stone tools- formed by pecking & polishing used for grinding, polishing. Archaeological sites are an on-renewable resource: in last 20 years, destruction of sites has reachd crisis proportions, rate of destruction is increasing.
