Document Summary

Memory learning over time with encoding, storage, and retrieval. Encoding get information into the brain. Retrieval get information back later on. Ebbinghaus suggested we learn information more meaningful to us. Those who learn quickly forget quickly (spacing effect). Atkinson-shiffrin memory model proposes memory in three ways: Sensory memory immediate, brief recording of sensory information in memory system. Short-term memory holds few items briefly before information is stored or forgotten (stored through encoding) Long-term memory relatively permanent, limitless store of memory; includes knowledge, skills, experiences. Working memory newer understanding of short term; adds conscious, active processing of auditory, visual, and long-term information. Implicit memory forms without conscious effort (automatic processing) Explicit memory facts and experiences we consciously know (effortful processing) Automatic processing bypasses conscious encoding track. Effortful processing encoded consciously and requires attention. Parallel processing many aspects of a problem at once; our brain"s natural mode. Iconic memory fleeting sight memory (3-4 seconds) Echoic memory fleeting sound memory (3-4 seconds)
