PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mood Disorder, Sertraline
Document Summary
The most common of all psychological disorders: major depression (example of mood disorder) interferes with your ability to function. More common in females than males, 3% in males, 5% in females. Graph: diathesis stress - we might have a predisposition towards depression. Number of major stressful events in your life - rates of depression for women for 1, 2, or 3 events go up dramatically. More stress you have in your life, more likely that genetic predisposition will display itself for depression (therapies that are pharmaceutical in nature/drugs (affect neurotransmitters like serotonin) vs tock therapy) Serotonin - for depression, you get prescribed with serotonin reuptake inhibitor (sri)- affecting levels of brain arousal. Use of sris alone vs use of cognitive behavioral therapy alone tend to be the same effectiveness: cog behavior therapy - break down schemas, social interactions, give them skills to offer behavioral change.
