ANTH10400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Franz Boas, Emic And Etic, Ethnic Group
Document Summary
Ethnography: writing about people, what anthropologists produce, different from other forms of writing like journalism, history, political science, and yet draws on many disciplines, can be in various mediums. Can also be a work of fiction (gets interest) Can be like a novel: ethnographies also have: **does it take you there*: must offer anonymity to subjects. Never put yourself or others in harm"s way. Often don"t include specific names, etc: speaks about cultural trends. Enthographic present: the ways in which people lived in the past may or may not be connected to the global system of today. Reciprocity is at the center of all cultures: can"t live without other people, past present future. In the present, we can look back at the past, and learn about the future. Holistic anthropology: findings in various sub-fields enhance each other. Want to embrace, not ignore other areas.
