Fusion of academic art and craftsmanship (no hierarchy among the crafts and arts) Evolution from abstract expressionism to rational functionalism. Emphasis on workshop as basis for education. Walter gropius founded bauhaus school in 1919, early practitioner of modern architecture, taught architecture at harvard spreading his style to america. His works were very radical and modern. Marianne brandt taught there also she developed the typical style of lamps (pixar style) Hebert bayer had work in typography and graphic design using an industrial sans- serif font. Ludwig mies van der rohe was an architect who designed a glass and steel house built on stilts (floating) for flooding purposes, houses are small back then small conservative and sensible. Form follows function (beautiful because its useful not vice versa, no waste every design choice serves a purpose)
