Sigmund freud: first interested in being a physiologist and how the nervous system works; worked with animals. Conscious level: tip of the iceberg; thoughts, perceptions, feelings. Preconscious level: not in your head all the time. Not aware but easy access if it"s mentioned. Learn how to get along; learn how to not get into trouble; being in control. Used by the ego to deal with psychic conflicts arising from conflicting impulses from id and. Denial: refuse to believe that the source of anxiety exists.
