17th century dutch east india company established the cape colony outpost. Europeans, british and dutch, expanded their presence in sa to pursue the land"s abundance of natural resources (gold, diamonds etc. ) over 3 centuries. 1910 whites founded the union of sa (independent arm of the british empire) gave the white minority control of the country while disenfranchising black. 1913 land act unofficially launched the apartheid by requiring the black population to live on reserves. Series of land acts moved populations into reservations. Sa was majority 75% black population but only occupied 10-20% of the land (80-90% belonged to the whites). 1948 national party (np) gained power and became part of the law/ideology officially. 1950 population registration act; classified all sa into 4 categories (bantu/black africans, Coloured/mixed race, white/european, asian/indian/pakistan: the mixed race was generally referred to as non-white". Pass laws required non-whites to carry documents authorising their presence in restricted areas.
