Idea is developed from goffman"s 1962 book, asylums: wrote about the effects that this structure had on individuals treatment and rehabilitation. Is a place that erects barriers to social interchange with the world at large. It a socially isolated place, self-suf cient & maintains. Question: what are other examples of total institutions, asylums, hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, convents, monasteries, military bases, what are the effect of being locked up in a total institution, loss & deprivation is the major effect! Inmates are inspected, weighed, documented & given an id number! Exposure to the social system of a prison community is almost immediate for all new inmates: inmates must quickly become aware of the norms & values shared by their fellow captives! The result is prisonization: the socialization process through which an inmate learns the rules & regulation of an institution, along with the informal rules, values, customs & general culture of a penitentiary, a person is transformed into a prisoner/inmate/convict.
