Gain insight into the origin, prevention, treatment of developmental problems (ex: fetal alcohol syndrome- obvious, down syndrome- harder to prevent) Nature vs. nurture: nature: traits, abilities, capacities that are inherited from parents, nurture: environmental influences that shape behavior, both are important! Ex is cognitive- able to think about things in qualitatively different way when you are in hs vs. elementary. Plasticity: idea that abilities, personality, & other human traits can change over time: critical period: occurs when presence of certain kinds of environmental stimuli are necessary for development to proceed normally (baby bird imprints on the. 1st thing it sees, if it"s not the mom, they will follow that thing around: rare in most species, esp. humans. After 9th week of conception, certain hormones determine the sex of the child: sensitive periods: we are susceptible to certain environmental stimuli, but consequences of absent stimuli are reversible.
