*** look at the notes from last lecture*** Sun emits many types of radiation, but not with the equal intensity or equal energy. The interaction of light and matter explains the damage uv light can cause and the mechanism that protects us from it. Solar radiation"s effects are lessened by passing through o2 (air) and through o3 (stratosphere) Stratospheric ozone- plays a vital role in protecting the earth"s surface and us from damaging solar radiation. It breaks down the strong particles of light: then the energy gets absorbed. In the 1970"s, it was revealed that certain chemicals go into the upper atmosphere and destroy the protective ozone. Since then, there has been an effort to control and reverse ozone destruction. Day 7 notes largest portion of the atmosphere. Troposphere: region directly above the surface of the earth: higher than what an airplane would fly. Highly reactive so it doesn"t stick around for a long time.
