Public good: something that does good for the public. Private good: something that is done for the betterment of the individual. Ex: private schools, any place you pay a membership. Schools as an expression of democratic political ideals and as a mechanism for preparing children to play constructive roles in democratic society. Schools as a mechanism for adaptation students to requirements of a hierarchical social structure and demands of the occupational market place. Makes it quicker to learn a skill and get a job. Schools should provide students with educational credentials they need in order to get ahead in the structure. Social mobility and efficiency accept that inequality is the center of a market society. Purpose of education is to provide students with a competitive advantage in the job market. Naturally teens want to seperate themselves into clusters and hierarchy. Most schools develop a type (class, age, ethnicity, background) It is an instinct to put yourself around similar people.
