Many times politics were just as or more important than religion. Henry vii and his desire for annulment. Puritans- wanted to purify the church of england. Pilgrims- wanted to completely separate from the church of england. Very similar to the puritans with the major exception: they were separatists- they felt that their differences with the anglican church were irreparable. Originally moved to the netherlands in early 1600s, but feared that their english culture was being corrupted so decided to move to virginia. Blown off course and landed on cape cod in 1620. Before disembarking they sign the mayflower compact- the first written framework of government in us. Wanted to see no signs of popery. Felt anglican church was too ceremonial and difficult to understand. Scripture was the main authority and biblical knowledge was to be aided by educated preachers. Supported england and were proponents of english liberty. There were the elect and those who were damned.
