James monroe and the era of good feelings. With the war of 1812, political opposition from the federalists was virtually non-existant. James monroe, though not particularly remarkable in politics, was well liked and well-respected man and one of the last from the revolutionary generation. The sweeping nationalism from the defeat of the british allowed monroe to play to these qualities, sometimes dressing in his military uniform from the revolutionary war or in the style of that era when on national tours. His first election saw minimal opposition, and his reelection went unopposed. In many ways, monroe"s presidency was indictive of the shift that was occurring. On one hand, he was the last of the revolutionary war vets , the last of the succession of virginia presidents, and the last of the jeffersonian republican presidents. He was an advocated internal improvements (market revolution) and sought to pass a constitutional amendment allowing the president and federal government the authority to do so.
