Document Summary

John quincy adams demonstrated a strong shift, which had begun to change under monroe, towards government involvement and support of the infrastructure. A former federalist who was forced to resign when he supported one of jefferson"s measures, he felt that government was instrumental in helping prod the market revolution. He spent more on internal improvements than the five previous administrations combined. He suggested that liberty is power and felt that the freest nation could also be the mightiest. Well many felt the government should support the growing economy, they thought that adams greatly overreached federal power against the tenants of his party. Opposition began to grow which would eventually lead to split and a new age of a party system. Martin van buren, a new york senator, began to organize the opposition to adams in many ways comma the clash between van buren and adams was symbolic of the changing times.
