This was the first war where railroads greatly influenced the objectives and outcomes. Lincoln was always looking for innovative technology on the battlefield. The north developed the anaconda plan - they wanted to constrict the south through blockade and close in them. Early northern generals focused on capturing richmond, which was an ineffective concept. The plan was to draw the war out and frusterate the north into submission. Divide the south in half by controlling the mississippi.
