Analysis of Ionic Architecture
- Think about meaning of Doric and Ionic
- Meaning of the specific forms
- Conditioning of approach (Doric temples frequently don’t have pedimental
sculpture)
- Pretty comparable time of origin between Ionic and Doric
- For Ionic:
- Way, way bigger
- Interior and exterior are of equal concern
- Rhoikos temple - looks like it is set up in a grid, simultaneously prioritizing the
interior and exterior
- Sculpture: from Egypt, begin using very hard materials - total adoption from the
Egyptians
- Temple of Artemis at Ephasus
- 560-540 B.C.
- Steps don’t even seen to be part of the temple, they are so far and out not
emphasised at all
- Columns like a forest
- Location - on the coastal plains, surrounded by flat ground
- This temple is in a grove of trees
- Imagine the approach: forest to the shaded pronaus to the roofless and
bright cella!
- There is no roof over the cella, we know because there are no
columns
- The eyes are drawn to the columns - the pediment is huge and heavy - brings the
eyes down, the architrave has horizontal bands surrounding the temple, keeps the
eyes down, the columns are thus what draws people’s attention first
- Elevation: Doric temples
- Doric is situated on high ground, easily visible from a far way off
- Somehow above the human
- In terms of decoration, like we described Ionic, the stairs are much larger and very
simply, raising the eyes, as if climbing them. The columns are vertical and fluted,
thus raising the eyes further. There are twice as many triglyphs as columns and it
is much more decorative, with their verticality also drawing the eye upwards.
There are twice as many mutuals hanging from the cornice as there are triglyphs,
