Document Summary

Edema: accumulation of excess liquid in tissue (swelling in face, fingers, ankles, and abdomen) Causes: (1) increased filtration (2) reduced reabsorption (3) blockage of lymph. Increased filtration = failure of right ventricle = build up in right atrium = slow down return of blood from body: pressure builds up in systemic capillaries with increased fluid forced into systemic tissues: systemic edema. Could cause circulatory shock: too much fluid leaves into tissue space: blood volume decreases, bp increases. Increased filtration = failure of left ventricle = build up in left atrium. = pressure builds in pulmonary capillaries with increased fluid pushed into lungs: pulmonary edema. Pressure gradient: generated by heart of left ventricle: pressure is weaker in veins than in arteries. Greater in venules than right atrium: pressure gradient is towards heart. Bp increases, pressure gradient increases, increase rate of venous return. Widespread vasoconstriction: increase bp, increase pressure gradient, increase rate of venous return.
