Description
Introduction While investigating a neighbors noise complaint local police officers arrive at the house where they see behavior that causes them to suspect drug use They collect a white powder that they suspect to be cocaine or heroin from the suspects kitchen table and send to the crime laboratory for analysis Drug analysis is a common aspect in crime investigations and can be used as evidence in many different kinds of cases including assault theft and even homicide Under the Controlled Substances Act the use and possession of heroin and cocaine is illegal The illicit drug market is very large and very extensive Multiple pieces of evidence such as tablets powders capsules joints cigarettes liquids and syringes highlight the vast sophistication of the drug market As such it is clear that one cannot simply identify a drug based on its outward appearance The analytical process of identifying a druginvolves dividing the plan into two different phases the screening tests and confirmation testsBoth tests work together to produce a determination A screening test is used as a nonspecific test to reduce the possibilities of the drugs composition to a smaller more manageable number Color tests which produce characteristic colors are often used to narrow down the drugs composition from thousands of options For the following experiment the objective is to narrow down the results by finding a characteristic color using two separate color tests A confirmation test usually involves the use of either Thinlayer or Gas Chromatography and a mass spectrometer to completely identify a substance Our goal is to determine what the powder from the suspects home is and these two kinds of tests will be employed to reach a conclusionExercise 1 Drug Screening TestsIntroduction A screening test is used as a nonspecific test to reduce the possibilities of the drugs composition to a smaller more manageable number Color tests which produce characteristic colors are often used to narrow down the drugs composition from thousands of options For the following experiment the objective is to narrow down the results by finding a characteristic color using two separate color tests The Marquis test turns purple in the presence of heroin and morphine while the cobalt thiocyanate test changes color in the presence of cocaine This is an important step to confirm what the suspects powder isPurpose To narrow down possible drug compositions using screening color tests MaterialsSpatulaMarquis reagentCobalt thiocyanate reagentspot plate with two wellsSamplesUnknown Sample 1
