Important Terms to Know:
Advance - a lump sum of loaned money that an artist might receive from a record label
or publishing company, in order to support their album recording, equipment purchases,
touring,etc.
Artist and Repertoire (A&R) - the person/department in a record company,b ooking
agency, or marketing firm responsible for finding (and sometimes developing) artists.
Endorsement - a promotional tactic employed by equipment manufacturers, clothing
brands, etc., in which they provide gear at discounted prices or free of charge, in
exchange for exposer generated during the tour.
Per Diem - a cash allowance for each day of the tour. Can be allocated to band
members, crew, or other personnel, in order to cover personal activities like food, drinks,
taxi’s, etc.
Performance Guarantee - an agreed minimum amount that an artist can expect to
receive at any given performance
360 Deal - also called multiple rights deal. A contract that allows a record label to
receive a percentage of the earnings from all of a band’s activities, instead of just from
record sales.
Common Roles:
Tour Manager - responsible for organizing all logistics associated with the tour,
including the band’s travel logistics, scheduling on the road (including interviews,
signings), and budgeting.
Booking Agent - sells talent, or secures gigs, on behalf of the artist in exchange for a
fee, usually 10% of the artist’s performance guarantee. Booking agents must be
licensed to negotiate contracts and generally contracted through labels, publicists, or
managers.
Promoter - buys talent, or curates a line-up and publicizes a show The promoter takes
on the risk of guaranteeing a minimum payment to the artist and minimum revenue to
the venue or festival.
Ex: Live Nation, WME, AGI, Creative Artists Agency, Paradigm Talent Agency
Publicist - a public relations and communications specialist who mainly focuses on
cultivating and mainstreaming the artist’s image. Maintains excellent relationships with
the media and other music industry professionals (managers, booking agents, etc.)
Event Organizer - anyone coordinating live music.
Road Manager - with larger acts, takes on the scheduling duties and travel plans.
Venue Owner - owns the space
