Characteristics of prenatal development (about 266 days, not very precise: conception (when sperm meets egg= fertilization) Embryonic period: 2-8 weeks after conception (organs/ system develops, foundation) Fetal period:2 months after conception, lasts about 7 months (physical growth, mature until it can survive outside the womb), 3 trimesters total: ends at birth. Brian: takes place during first 2 trimesters, at birth babies will have 100 billion neurons. Fetal mri: magnetic image through radio waves. Chorionic villus sampling: tissue sample (if baby might have any defects) Amniocentesis: amniotic fluid taken out to test for abnormalities or disorder. Maternal blood screening: blood test to find birth defects. Teratogens: any agents (both external or internal) that cause birth defects.
