Ch 9 study guide: social and emotional development. Attachment: the positive emotional bond that develops between a child and a particular person, usually the primary caregiver. Harlow"s experiments: attachment was more influenced by contact comfort , the baby spent more time with soft warm surrogate and only went to wire monkey for brief periods of feeding. Bowlby"s theory about the basis of attachment: attachment based on the infant"s need for safety and security. Secure attachment: mother used as a secure home base, infant explored but occasional returned, may or not be upset when mother leaves but immediately greets when she returns. Insecure avoidant attachment: infant doesn"t seek proximity to the mother, at east when exploring when she"s present, not distressed when she leaves, indifferent when she returns. Insecure resistant (ambivalent) attachment: infant shows combination of positive and negative responses. May initially cling and show anxiety, highly distressed when she leaves, ambivalent reactions when she returns, difficult to control.
