PSY 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Psych, Sunk Costs, Loss Aversion
Document Summary
Retrieval: spacing repetitions = forgetting in between, which means you have to engage in retrieval to remember the prior presentation. Variability: each presentation more likely to be encoded in a slightly different state/context when repetitions spaced apart in time. For repeated study it is best to have a variety of different places. Learned on formula and practice, 2nd formula practice, etc. (blocked) Learn all 4 formulas at the same time and then practice (interleaved) > retention interval (5 mins vs 1 week) 5 mins- those that studied more, remembered more. 1 week- those that were tested retained the information they learned; those that simply read and reread did not. Tests don"t just assess learning, they strengthen learning. Though you should also use tests to see what information you don"t understand. Rereading your notes/slides/book can lead to a sense of fluency, even if you don"t really know the information. Use tests to see what you understand.
