It started in 1648 with the westphalia treaty which put an end to the thirty years war (1618-1648). The war was triggered by the reformation martin luther, who is considered to be the. It was a war between the bible and the pope. Before the war, the pope used to decide everything. The westphalia treaty-1648: the birth of sovereign state, end to the thirty years war, holy roman empire ended, each state got sovereignty- ultimate decision making. Since then, there was a balance of power for order not an empire. All the weapons we now know, started here. Causes triple entente: russia, france, britain triple alliance: germany, austria-hungary, italy: personal level. Assassination of prince ah empire: national level. Rise of germany broke power balance in europe. Decline of old empires and the rise of the new power. Aftermath: idealism/internationalism of the us prevails, wilson"s moralistic pragmatism, america came into existence, america"s idea completely different to european"s one, treaty of versailles.
